    Pharmacotherapeutic Group: Anxiolytic agent

Pharmacodynamic properties: Alprazolam, like other benzodiazepines, has a high affinity for the benzodiazepine binding site in the brain. It binds to the the inhibitory neurotransmitter γ aminobutyric acid (GABA) throughout the CNS, which mediates both pre- and post synaptic inhibition in the central nervous system (CNS).This leads to an increase in the inhibitory effect of GABA on neuronal excitability due to increased neuronal permeability to chloride ions thus results in hyperpolarisation and stabilisation.
